I'm off to receive a lecture!
In 2 hours I have an appointment with a nutritionist to discuss my high cholesterol levels. Let me show you what they are:
LDL "bad cholesterol"- 148 (normal is below 130)
HDL "good cholesterol"- 46 (normal is 40-59)
Triglycerides: 265 (normal is 0-59)
Total Cholesterol: 247 (normal is 100-199)
I've been asked to keep a food journal for the past 3 days. I actually plan on bringing on in for all of last week.
I fully expect this appointment to be a lecture on what a crappy eater I am. I don't eat enough veggies, I eat too many fatty foods, I don't exercise enough. I need to change my lifestyle.
Can you tell I'm dreading this a bit? I'm not even sure if this appointment is covered by insurance so I may be paying about $87 for a lecture.
I'm not sure how much the fact that high cholesterol runs in my family will weigh in. Both my parents and my 2 sisters are on high cholesterol medication because they couldn't lower their levels even after changing their eating and excercising habits.
Despite not looking forward to the well-deserved lecture that I'm sure to receive, I know I need to go because I don't want to die of a heart attack or heart disease! I owe it to myself and my family to get these cholesterol levels under control and I obviously need help doing so.
I hope this appointment will give me tools to help me change my eating habits for the better. I'm going to ask for concrete lists on foods to avoid and foods to eat more of, I'm going to ask for recipes and help with menu planning. I'm going to try to get my money's worth out of this appointment.
I'll try to stop back today or tomorrow to give you all a report on the results of my appointment with the nutritionist, so please stop back.
In the meantime, I'm curious, when's the last time you had your cholesterol levels checked and how were they? Does high cholesterol run in your family?

Let me know how it goes!! Good luck!!!!
When I had my cholesterol checked almost a year ago everything was in the low-to-mid normal range. However I got a big calling-out/lecture for my lack of exercise.
Since then I joined a gym and ran a 5K. OK, a 12 minute per mile pace is more like a slow jog but I finished it! Having the race as a goal kept me going to the gym but since then I've been slacking. I want to be around for Honey and Princess as long as possible. Why isn't that enough to keep me motivated?
I have very high cholesterol... VERY high, I mean it is high for several reasons, inherited and because I am overweight so I take meds and do watch what I eat. I do admit that I need to be more disciplined. For example, this weekend I had steak with the mushroom sauce that I had on FIF. I know better, the sauce is a big no no and I am only allowed 6 oz of beef a week and the steak was 8.
So, I will pray for you and you pray for me for discipline and I hope the lecture wasn't too harsh. Mine was an eye opener for sure.
Hugs!
i think Omega 3's are good (check)& exercise...
Please give us an update. My husband gets his cholesterol checked every year with his work physical. I haven't had mine done in a while, but it was always in the healthy range. I don't eat especially well either. I try to though.
I've never had my cholesterol checked, and there's some family history. I could definitely be better about eating and exercising, but I could be worse too!
Hope your appointment goes well.
The first, and only, time I had my cholesterol checked was a couple years ago. It was for our life insurance. Mine was in the safe zone, but it was still higher than my hubby -- who lives on double cheeseburgers, cheese tater tots and ribs. He's also never gained an ounce since we got married...and I'm about 15 pounds heavier. Just goes to show you how much is hereditary.
I'd love to hear some of the suggestions you get from the nutritionist...we could all stand to eat a little healthier.
Good luck!
We had our checked a year ago (it was part of the required medical exam for our state adoption) and mine was in the low to normal range. I am overweight and do not exercise enough either, but I have just never had a problem with cholesterol (unlike DH). DH's was in the high range but it was waaaaay lower than it was when he was in college, so I was really proud of him! Hope your lecture wasn't too bad! :)
Good luck. I haven't had all that checked, since......I was pregnant with the last kid, which was 4 years ago. I know I need to do it, but haven't wanted to. Maybe you can give me courage.
Mine was okay the last time they checked but I am overdue and have a slip to get it checked agian. I'm dreading going, because I deserve a lecture too. Good luck!
O my! I hope you share your secrets with us :) when you get the info. My numbers are good, as long as I do not weigh myself :)!

Fun, fun, fun! I'll just copy your notes, and then I can skip that appointment. Sound like a deal? Actually, the doc said after we can safely say we aren't going to get pregnant (as in using contraception), he's putting me on meds. Mine isn't great, but not out of control. My family history is beeeeeyoooond terrible though.
However, why would an infertile woman use birth control? I just look at him curiously, but said nothing.
Good luck at the nutritionist. Hopefully its more than a lecture. I would love to hear what she has to say.
I havent had my cholesterol checked, and I know its something i need to do.
Only had mine checked once - last year - little high and they told me to watch what I was eating. Since then, I did Weight Watchers and lost 12 lbs. but since I stopped 'watching what I was eating' with WW, I'm sure I've slid back down (or up I guess) again.
Don't exercise at all anymore - before kids, every day. Now, never. But I just bought a bike this weekend and hopefully family rides will help.
