When did kids bedroom furniture get so expensive?!
So, we're in the market for a new bed (and if I have my way, a new bedroom set) for Snuggle Bug. In specific, I want a twin bed with a trundle so that his little friends have a place to sleep when he starts doing sleepovers. I'm not sure I'm comfortable with the idea of bunk beds yet, although I know he'd be thrilled.  He's only 4 1/2 years old.  I'd worry about him falling off in the midst of climbing up the ladder.

I've done research online and I must say I'm a bit shocked at the prices! Oronzo seems to think he's going to walk into a furniture store and walk out with a bed for $200. I told him that I seriously doubt he'll get anything of any quality for $200 (I don't want a metal frame for a bed)...and that's not even considering the additional cost of the mattress.

Here's a set I kind of like. Want to guess the price?

On sale for $400 + S/H (about $100 for that, I believe).  No mattress included.

This bed & trundle is about $450 + S/H, not including mattresses.

This white bed & trundle is $448 + S/H.

I like the white only because the rest of Snuggle Bug's furniture pieces (dresser, bookshelves) are white so it'd match.

If I had my way, I'd love to invest in an entire bedroom set for Snuggle Bug (and eventually for Boo too).  Sure, he's only 4 1/2 and really doesn't care, but it'd nice to get something of quality that would last him into at least his pre-teen years.

This is what I'd love to get:

This set, priced at $1,450.00 (free S/H) includes:
  • Bed: headboard, footboard and siderails in either twin or full size
  • Dresser and Mirror: 6 drawer design and portrait style mirror
  • Chest: 5 drawer design
  • Nightstand: 2 drawer design
  • Trundle: pull out bed
Unfortunately, Oronzo says there's no way he's spending that kind of money on a 4 1/2 year old.  ((sigh))

I'm not sure what we'll end up getting.  Wish me luck in trying to search out the best prices!

Why don't you look into having a woodworker make a bed? It may or may not be less expensive, depending on how much they charge and the price of the wood you choose, but it can't hurt to check into it. Call your local woodworking specialty store and they can put you in touch with a woodworking guild.

If you have someone who can put stuff together, try IKEA. The furniture will be reasonably priced and will last a while for a 4 year old.

This past weekend, I got a dresser, a night stand, and a bureau for $300. Add some elbow grease and VOILA!

I'd defently try Ikea if you have one nearby.. or even craigslist.. I've gotten some great items on there for almost nothing.

we got our broyhill bunk beds on craigslist for $250 last year and I lOVE them! You have to hunt, but you'll find one if you look online every day.

Thanks for catching my slip on my blog today-

If it makes you feel better, we bought our daughter's trundle (very similar to the white one you chose) at a discount furniture store for about $700. That included the mattress for her bed and the "bunkie" mattress for the trundle, but it was still pricey. However, she has had it for 3 years and it has held up really well! The only other suggestion is to check Craigslist and see if you could find a quality used trundle. Good luck!

I have to agree with O, at that age the furniture may not stay looking nice into his teens. Would you be too fussy with it throughout the years, worried he would damage it. When he is about 7-8 then maybe a new set would last and still look good.

we're in the same situation and then my husband found a decent set at walmart. we went from looking at raymour and flanigan to walmart lol. but anyway it looks to be a good set with good reviews and bed, mattress and dresser comes to $500. i figure we'll need to replace it in a few years when he takes more responsibility for his belongings (he's almost 4) so am going for a cheap in-between.

We put the metal beds in the same category as Ikea. We just got the girls new bedroom furniture and it was insane. We had to see it as an investment, if we bought something of low quality it is more likely to fall apart if we spend a bit extra hopefully it can endure them!

If you have a Costco membership look at them, they often have good deals in store or online on bedroom furniture.
