It's Friday again and time for another recipe Five Ingredients Friday exchange! Before I post my recipe, I'd like to ask a few question.
Are you running out of recipes that have only 5 or fewer ingredients? Do you think I should expand this to, say, a 14 ingredient recipe exchange? I, personally, like the simplicity of the fewer ingredient recipes, but I'm open to considering more if enough of you tell me that's what you want. Your feedback would be appreciated.

It's Friday again and time for another recipe Five Ingredients Friday exchange!
Before I get started with that, I'd like to bring your attention to my upcoming Holiday Cooking, Blogger Style recipe exchange that's scheduled to take place on Monday, October 2nd. I hope I can count on you to participate! Now, back to my regularly scheduled program.

Carmel Apple Butter
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup water
- 8 ounces butter
- 8 ounces apples, chopped
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- Place the sugar and water in a thick bottomed sauce pot and heat it over a medium heat until the ingredients melt together.
- Continue heating the mixture as the water evaporates and the remaining sugar begins to caramelize.
- When it is a deep golden brown color add the remaining ingredients.
- Stir them frequently and continue cooking until the apples are mushy, about ten minutes.
- Place the hot mixture in a blender and carefully puree until very smooth.
- Transfer to a storage container and refrigerate until chilled.
This is really yummy on pancakes, French toast, cinnamon & brown sugar muffins, or even plain old toast!

It's time again for my Five Ingredients Friday recipe exchange! Thank you all who participate.
My Five Ingredients Friday recipe this week is extremely simple and possibly something you already make yourself. I was surprised to learn that a couple of my friends didn't know about this recipe until I made it for them at dinner one night.

Grilled Bell Peppers
Ingredients:
Red, Yellow, or Green Bell Peppers (I like to use all 3)
Olive Oil
Garlic salt (coarse ground version)

Preparation:
Wash the peppers, then cut them into thick strips, julienned style
Put them in a bowl, drizzle olive oil over them.
Sprinkle a liberal amount of garlic salt over them.
Mix together well & then throw on the grill for about 5 minutes for each side.
That's it. That's all there is to it. These are so delicious!!! If you haven't made them already, give it a try. I think you'll like them!

It's time again for my Five Ingredients Friday recipe exchange! Thank you all who participate on a regular basis.
My Five Ingredients Friday recipe this week is a dish that my mom used to make for us when we were kids. It's nothing gourmet, but we all loved it.
Every Tuesday evening, Oronzo goes out to play tennis with a couple of friends and then they go out for dinner. Oronzo gets a night out and I get a night of having Snuggle Bug all to myself. It's a win win situation.
So, this past Tuesday evening I was craving the dish I'm about to post. I made it for Snuggle Bug and myself and we both enjoyed it! If you make it, I hope you enjoy it too!
Tuna & Noodle Casserole
Ingredients:
package of egg noodles
1 can of cream of mushroom soup
1/2 cup of milk
3 Tbsp of mayo
1 can tuna
Preparation:
Cook the noodles.
In a glass casserole bowl, mix can of soup, milk, mayo, & tuna.
Add egg noodles into the casserole bowl.
Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes.
Optional additions: sprinkle on the top a handful of crushed potato chips and/or shredded cheese and bake for 5-10 minutes more.
I suppose you could also add peas to this recipe, but I despise peas so I never do. :)

It's time to exchange recipes for Five Ingredients Friday! Back to posting recipes of 5 ingredients or less.
It's hot here and I'm always looking for cool treats for Snuggle Bug.
This recipe is something that I concocted at home.
I've been a bit leery of giving Snuggle Bug popsicles from the grocery store because I don't think they're exactly healthy. So, when I found a freezer pop mold, I bought it and decided to try to make my own healthier popsicles.

It's time to exchange recipes for Five Ingredients Friday! This Friday, I'm going to change the rules slightly, to accomodate a fellow blogger, Jess, who claims she just doesn't know many recipes with 5 ingredients or less. So Jess, this one's for you. This Friday I want to see recipes that are 5 ingredients or MORE! Don't worry, next Friday we'll go back 5 ingredients or less.
My contribution is actually from Oronzo. He's given me permission to post his oh-so-delicious Italian marinara sauce recipe. Believe me when I tell you this recipe is well worth the work! When it's made in our household, a big stock pot of sauce simmers on the stove for hours, making the whole house smell Heavenly!
Of course, we can't eat a whole stock pot of sauce in one sitting, so we break it up into individual Ziplock bowl containers and stick it in the freezer to be used again and again at later meals. I use this sauce not just for spaghetti but also for cooking whenever a recipe calls for tomato sauce or red sauce of any kind.
Oronzo learned this recipe from his Italian grandmother and I'm told this woman was a fantastic cook! If any of you take the time to make this sauce, and I hope you do, stop back and let me know how it turned out for you.
Oronzo's Italian Marinara Sauce
Ingredients
2 bulbs garlic
1 large yellow onion
10+ sweet Italian sausages
4 (28 oz.) cans of whole tomatoes
4 (6 oz) cans of tomato paste
oregano (to taste)
basil (to taste)
parsley (to taste)
salt (to taste)
pepper (to taste)
crushed red pepper (to taste)
3 whole bay leaves
1 bottle Merlot red wine
olive oil
Directions
Chop up onion (into large chunks) & garlic, throw in a large stock pot with olive oil & sauté until onion is soft and translucent.
Throw in sweet Italian sausages & cook until juice escapes sausages when pierced with a knife. Remove the sausages & place in a covered bowl in the refrigerator until you're ready to add them later to the simmering sauce.
Add 1 can of whole tomato & 1 can of tomato paste + 1 tomato past can full of water into a blender & blend on pulse for just a few seconds. Pour mixture into stock pot with the onion & garlic. Blend the 2nd can of whole tomatoes & tomato paste (don't forget the tomato paste can full of water), pour into the stock pot, & continue until all cans have been blended & added.
Add about 1/2 to 3/4 bottle of Merlot wine to the pot of sauce. Drink the rest! :)
Add a handful of each (or more or less, according to your tastes) of oregano, basil, & parsley to the pot of sauce. Then add salt, pepper, and crushed red pepper to taste.
Put the Italian sausages (or pre-cooked meatballs) back into the sauce to simmer.
Put 3 whole bay leaves on the top of the sauce & leave in for flavoring while the sauce is simmering. Be sure to remove all bay leaves before serving.
Let sauce simmer for several hours before serving! Serve over pasta of your choice! Freeze leftovers for later meals.

It's time to exchange recipes for Five Ingredients Friday! I swear, this has been so helpful for my weekly menu planning. I make a point to use at least a couple of recipes from this exchange each week, just to try new things. The ones I don't use right away, I print out and store in my "cooking ideas" binder. So, please, keep participating!
The recipe I'm posting for today is something that I saw on TV as Snuggle Bug and I were munching on Goldfish crackers and watching Food Network together (that's one of our favorite channels). I haven't tried this recipe yet, but I'm going to! If you beat me to it, let me know how it tastes, will you?

It's time to exchange recipes for Five Ingredients Friday! Before you read my recipe for this week, glance below and see my post on 1 Real Life Person now knows about my blog. The recipe I'm posting for today is what I made for dinner this past Monday. I got it from my Campbell's Classic recipe book (great cookbook, by the way). Ironically, I substituted Oronzo's homemade Italian marinara sauce for the can of tomato soup that the recipe called for. Oronzo's marinara sauce is so much more flavorful!
1 lb ground beef
1 medium onion, chopped
1 can (10 ¾ oz) tomato soup
¼ cup water
1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese
2 c cooked corkscrew pasta (1 ½ c uncooked)
Directions
In medium skillet over medium-high heat, cook beef & onion until beef is browned, stirring to separate meat. Pour off fat.
Add soup/sauce, water, Worcestershire, cheese and pasta. Reduce heat to low and heat through.
I look forward to seeing your Five Ingredients Friday recipe!

It's time to exchange recipes for Five Ingredients Friday! This is really helping me with meal planning for my family, so please participate!
Remember, post a recipe that involves only 5 ingredients or less. It can be a main dish, an appetizer, a side dish, a dessert, a beverage...I really don't care...but it must only have 5 ingredients or less.
Here's my recipe for Friday. I've made this twice now, just last night in fact, and Oronzo and Snuggle Bug seem to like it!

Filo-Wrapped Fish
Select a chunky variety of tomato sauce or spaghetti sauce for this simple but delicious recipe. The choice of fish can be varied according to what is in season and what is freshest on the day of purchase. When working with filo pastry, keep it covered with clear film (plastic wrap) or a damp dishtowel, as once it's exposed to air it dries out quickly and is difficult to handle.
Ingredients
- 4 1/2 oz filo pastry (6-8 large sheets)
- 2 Tbsp olive oil, for brushing
- 1 lb salmon or cod steaks or fillets
- 2 1/2 cup fresh tomato or spaghetti sauce
- mozzarella cheese
Directions
- Preheat oven to 200 degrees C/400 degrees F. Take a sheet of filo pastry, brush with a little olive oil and cover with a second sheet of pastry. Repeat, until you have 4 layers of filo.
- Place a piece of fish on top of the pastry, towards the bottom edge, then top with 1-2 spoonfuls of the tomato/spaghetti sauce, spreading it in an even layer. Top with mozzarella cheese.
- Roll the fish in the pastry, taking care to enclose the filling completely. Brush with olive oil to seal edges and brush the top. Arrange on a baking sheet and repeat with the remaining fish and pastry. You should have about half the sauce remaining.
- Bake for 10-15 minutes, or until golden.
- Additional step added by our household: When filo-wrapped fish is crisp and golden, add more tomato/spaghetti sauce and mozzarella cheese to the top of each, then set in oven to broil until cheese is melted.
Enjoy!

Good morning, Blogland! It's time for our recipe exchange. Thanks to those that participated last Friday with my launch of Five Ingredients Friday. I've really enjoyed the recipes that you've submitted and I hope to get even more this week! I'm in desperate need for simple ideas. I scorched a sauce that I was trying to make for dinner last night. It wasn't pretty!
Here's my recipe for this Friday. I've made it for Oronzo and Snuggle Bug and they loved it!

Pork Kebabs
(Serves 4)
The word kebab comes from Arabic and means on a skewer. Use pork fillet (tenderloin) for these kebabs because it is lean and tender, and cooks ver quickly. They are good served with rice, or stuffed into warmed pitta bread with some shredded lettuce leaves.
Ingredients
- 500 g/1 1/4 lb lean pork fillet (tenderloin)
- 8 large, thick spring onions (scallions)
- 120 ml/4 fl oz/1/2 cup barbeque sauce
- 1 lemon
Directions
- Cut the pork into 2.5cm/1in cubes. Cut the spring onions into 2.5cm/1in long sticks.
- Preheat the grill (broiler) to high. Oil the wire rack to prevent sticking.
- Arrange the pork and onions on the skewer in an alternating fashion (as shown in the picture).
- Grill (broil) until the pork juices drip.
- Brush barbeque sauce on the pork (and the onions too, if you'd like) and grill for 30 seconds on each side, repeating the barbeque sauce application process twice more.
- Arrange the skewers on a platter. Cut the lemon into wedges and squeeze a little lemon juice over each skewer. Serve immediately, offering the remaining lemon wedges separately.
Cook's Tip
If you are cooking pork on a barbeque, soak the wooden skewers overnight in water. This prevents them burning. Keep the skewer handles away from the fire and turn them frequently.
Enjoy!

Okay, I'm going to start something that I think may be new here in Blogland, something called Five Ingredients Friday. I hope you'll hop on the bandwagon with me.
I love trying new recipes and I'm always looking for good ones that are quick, easy, and delicious! Here's how I'd like it to work. Every Friday, post a recipe that involves only 5 ingredients or less. It can be a main dish, an appetizer, a side dish, a dessert, a beverage...I really don't care...but it must only have 5 ingredients or less. The idea is that it's a quick, delicious recipe to enjoy with your family and friends. You can pull these recipes out of your personal recipe collection, a cookbook, on-line, or from any other creative means that you can come up with.
Once you've posted your 5 ingredient recipe, add your blog link to my post so that others can take a look at yours. If you actually prepare one of the recipes you've found on a Five Ingredients Friday post, go back to that blog where the recipe originated from and leave a comment critiquing how the recipe turned out for you.
Oh, and feel free to use the image that I've created for your Five Ingredients Friday post, I don't mind! Questions, let me know!
Having now established the guidelines, I'll submit my first recipe. This one is dedicated to the cravings of this expectant mother. She felt compelled to stop at Red Lobster for their Cheddar Bay Biscuits. Why pay Red Lobster prices when you can make them at home? Enjoy!

Quick Cheddar Cheese Biscuits
(Makes 8 biscuits.)
Ingredients
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 1/4 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 cup shredded sharp Cheddar cheese
- 2 TBSP chilled butter
- 2/3 cup milk
Directions
- Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Combine flour & baking powder in a medium bowl (optional addition, 1/2 tsp salt).
- Cut in butter using a pastry blender or 2 knives until coarse crumbs form.
- Using a fork, stir milk into flour mixture until a soft dough forms. Do not overmix or overwork dough.
- Stir in shredded Cheddar cheese.
- Drop dough in heaping tablespoons, 1 inch apart, onto ungreased baking sheet (I use a Silpat mat, they're awesome).
- Bake until biscuits are firm to the touch, about 15 minutes.
Suggestions
- Try basting the biscuits with melted butter and Hidden Valley Ranch powder.
- Freeze these biscuits to have for mini egg sandwiches. Defrost biscuits; reheat for 10 minutes. Fill with scrambled eggs, bacon, and Cheddar.
- Complement a spaghetti dinner: use Parmesan cheese instead of Cheddar and add 1/2 tsp dried basil in Step 1 of directions.
And so, Five Ingredients Friday has been officially launched! Please participate because I need some new recipe ideas. Thanks!
