Feed Me Cheesy

A very heart-warming and, dare I say "cute," new blog was brought to my attention recently. It's called Feed Me Cheesy and in Mylene's own words, here's what it's all about:

It's quite often that we find ourselves looking for things that will nourish our hearts – in movies, special occasions, novels, and poems — but surprisngly, it's a bit difficult with all the clutter in our world. Feed Me Cheesy was created in March 2009 to collect all these warm, cheesy moments and answer that need for people to laugh, cry and say "awwww" to the different moments and people that continually make our lives meaningful.

Welcome to the Feed Me Cheesy Community.

If you haven't already checked out Mylene's new blog, please take a moment to do so.  There's some good stuff there!  And be sure to check out these posts for some cute baked good ideas:

Follow up to coupon tips post- winner chosen!
On November 19th I showed you this:

I posed the question, How much do you think I spent on the groceries listed in the picture above? Go ahead, click on the image to enlarge.

I even itemized what I purchased:

* Dial liquid hand soap- quantity 5
* Betty Crocker specialty potatoes- quantity 9
* Colgate adult toothbrush- quantity 2
* Hunts tomatoes (28-29 oz cans)- quantity 2
* Quaker oatmeal (18 oz)- quantity 6
* Zatarain's rice mix- quantity 2
* Land O Lakes buter(15-16 oz)- quantity 4
* SuperPretzel snack- quantity 1
* Viva paper towels- quantity 3
* Quaker chewy granola bars (8 pack)- quantity 2
* International Delight creamer (32 oz)- quantity 2
* Hershey's extra dark chocolate bar (4.5 oz)- quantity 1
* Blistex chap stick- quantity 3
* French's French fried onions (6 oz)- quantity 3
* Kellogg's pop tarts (8 pack)- quantity 3
* Mrs. Smith pre-made pie crust (2 pack)- quantity 1
* Suave deodorant (2.6 oz)- quantity 2

Well, here's a copy of my receipt, showing what I spent on that particular batch of groceries!

So, for that large batch of groceries, I spent a whopping $8.82 for 50 items!  I saved $130.11 for a 94% total savings!

So, how did that happen you might wonder?  Well, there are a few ways the savings added up:

1) My Fry's Food & Drug store is offering quadruple coupons (up to $1.00 off) through 12/30/08.  They're also accepting competitor's coupons and for those I was able to take a store coupon and stack it with a manufactures coupons.  For example, there was a Walgreen's coupon for Blistex reduced to $0.99 each, limit 3.  I had 3 manufacturers coupon for $0.25 off each, which quadrupled raised it to $1.00 savings.  That meant Blistex was free!

2) That particular week, they were doing amazing sales on many of the products I purchase!

3) I had coupons for every item that I purchased.  Those coupons made many of the either FREE or under $0.50 per item.

It's not often that you can get these kind of deals (free or nearly free) but great deals can be had when you have the patience to watch the sales and match up coupons.

So, the closest guess for my total grocery bill was $12 from The Happy Housewife so she's won the 12 free holiday recipe cards.

Thank you all for your participation!

Holiday Cooking, Blogger Style- 3rd Edition

For the past couple of years I've hosted a big Holiday Cooking, Blogger Style recipe exchange and I've been delighted with the impressive participation from my fellow bloggers!

The day has arrived to kick off my 3rd Annual Holiday Cooking, Blogger Style recipe exchange!  Hooray!

Before we get started, I'd like to announce the winner of my personalized recipe cards, for those of you who helped spread the word these past couple of weeks.  Thanks everyone!

The winner was randomly selected using Random.org.

And the winner is...

...
# 18,  Cris over at From Our Home To Yours.   Cris, please send me your full name and mailing address so that I can send you your personalized holiday recipe cards. If I don't hear from you within a week, I will choose another winner.

Now then, if you intend to participate in my holiday recipe exchange, and I hope you do, I'd like to lay out just a few guidelines.

1) Recipes can be as long or as short as you'd like. They can be quick and simple or they can be a bit more complex. You can post more than one recipe if you'd like. Don't worry if you think there might be duplicates of the recipe you have in mind (more than one stuffing recipe, for example) because I'll bet each recipe is unique.

2) I'd appreciate holiday recipes that are tried and true. They don't have to be your own creations, I don't care where you originally got the recipe from, I just ask that you post a recipe that's worked for you in the past. Feel free to give credit where credit is due. If you post a recipe from your aunt Martha Stewart, by all means, mention that! I'll be sharing some family recipes.

3) When you post your recipe on your blog, within your post be sure to link back my post so that others know where to come and view more recipes. Feel free to use the graphic above in your post or on your sidebar.

4) Once you've posted your recipe on your blog, don't forget to stop back and link on my Mr. Linky so that everyone can stop by and take a look at your recipe. I'd really appreciate it if you'd put your recipe title in parenthesis in Mr. Linky. And please link directly to your recipe post, not just your blog, so that it's easy for people to find your recipe no matter what day they're looking for it!

5) There's no deadline on when you have to post your recipe. This post isn't going anywhere, so take your time! I'll have this post linked up on my sidebar until next year's Holiday Cooking, Blogger Style recipe exchange!

Okay, enough with the guidelines let the fun begin! I can't wait to see your holiday recipes! I promise, I will visit your blog to see your recipe if you link here. It may take me a little while to get there, but I will get there!

Win a FREE Energizer® Light on Demand™ product!

Kate with Weber Shandwick recently asked me if I'd be interested in reviewing the new Energizer® Light on Demand™ products. "I'd love to!" I told her. And guess what, she's offering three products to use as giveaways for my readers (more on that in a minute).

I chose to review the tabletop nightlight and I have to say that we LOVE it! Before I explain why, let me share some details with you about this product.

Features and Benefits:

* Rechargeable light stick, nightlight, portable area light and flashlight all in one.
* The nightlight plugs into the wall for everyday use and contains a sensor that automatically turns the nightlight on when the room darkens.
* Includes a "Find Me™" light.
* Can run on batteries as an area light for 25 hours and as a flashlight light for 10 hours.

When I got the tabletop nightlight out of it's box, I plugged it in to charge and literally within minutes it was ready to go!

Now Snuggle Bug, at almost 3 1/2 years old, has suddenly become scared of various things in his room at night. We have dimmer switch lights in his room and we've been forced to leave the light pretty bright each night. I've thought about finding him a little night light but I worried that the little outlet ones wouldn't be bright enough to offer much comfort.

The other night I took this light stick into his room and told him it was his new nightlight so he didn't have to be scared any more. He looked at it closely and said, "The sun is in there!" Then we spent about 10 minutes setting the light stick in various places around his room until he settled on having it on a bookshelf across the room from his bed.

The light that this nightlight emits is powerful enough to give the room a soft glow (chasing away scary shadows) but not so bright that it keeps Snuggle Bug awake. He sleeps like a baby with his new nightlight!

I love the fact that when this light stick is plugged into it's base, it has an auto setting that automatically turns it off or on depending on the amount of light in the room. I also love the fact that you can switch between using this light stick as a nightlight or a flashlight. It's wonderful!

Now for the good stuff, Kate has offered me the following three products to be given away to three lucky readers:

Wall Sconce

Features and Benefits:

* Decorative and easy to install.
* Designed for intermittent use, the wall sconce features a high- and low-light setting.
* Cordless installation - no electrician necessary.
* Available in Brass and Nickel.

Twin Light Center

Features and Benefits:

* Easy to mount to a wall, under a cabinet or place on a countertop, and doesn’t require hard wiring.
* Combines two detachable area lights with a nightlight.
* One of the detachable lights can function as a flashlight and the base of the light center features a permanent nightlight.
* Can run on batteries as a flashlight for 10 hours and an area light for 5 hours.

Desk Light

Features and Benefits:

* Lamp, rechargeable LED light stick and emergency light all in one.
* Includes a "Find Me™" light.
* Can run up to 20 hours on a "low" setting before batteries need to be replaced.

So, all you have to do to have a chance to win any of these three products is leave me a comment asking to be entered into the drawing. I'll choose a winner on Monday, 23 June.

I do ask that each winner be willing to post your own review after you've received your product and have had some time to try it out.

By the way, if you're not one of the lucky winners, Energizer® Light on Demand™ products are currently available nationally at Target. The line will also be sold at several other major retail stores soon.

Good luck to you all!

Note:  Comments are now closed and three winners have been selected.  Thank you for your participation!

Blogger now schedules future-dated posts

In case those of you who use Blogger missed the announcement on the Dashboard, you are now able to schedule future-dated posts! How fabulous is that?!

Our family is going on a mini-vacation, leaving 9 May and returning 17 May, and I worried about my poor little blog being left all by its lonesome while I was gone (internet access is doubtful where we're going). I thought about arranging guest bloggers to come in and publish posts for me but now I don't need to!

Now I can write up a couple of posts in advance (like a BloggedIn Highlight, Works-For-Me Wednesday, and Favorite Ingredients Friday), hit "publish post" and let Blogger take care of making sure they get published at the correct date/time. Blogger will do the work for me while I'm on vacation hanging out on the beach or frolicking in the ocean with the kids!

And you know what, this works! I tested the future-dated posting with this very post that you're reading now. I wrote it the night before and scheduled it for 6:00 AM (well before I'm up and about) and got a wonderful message on my dashboard that read, "Your post will be automatically published on 5/3/08 at 6:00 AM."

I am so loving Blogger right now!

Favorite Ingredients Friday (Greatest Hits Edition)

Happy Friday! It's time for my Favorite Ingredients Friday Greatest Hits Edition! I'd like you to share one of your favorite FIF recipes that you've posted in the past. If you're brand new to FIF, just post one of your favorite family recipes.

To give credit where credit is due, I must admit that I got the "greatest hits" idea from Shannon when she ran her Works-For-Me Wednesday Greatest Hits Edition. Thanks, Shannon!

So, my past FIF recipe post has to be this one:

Oronzo's Italian Marinara Sauce

Ingredients
2 bulbs garlic
1 large yellow onion
10+ sweet Italian sausages
4 (28 oz.) cans of whole tomatoes
4 (6 oz) cans of tomato paste
oregano (to taste)
basil (to taste)
parsley (to taste)
salt (to taste)
pepper (to taste)
crushed red pepper (to taste)
3 whole bay leaves
1 bottle Merlot red wine
olive oil

Directions
Chop up onion (into large chunks) & garlic, throw in a large stock pot with olive oil & sauté until onion is soft and translucent.

Throw in sweet Italian sausages & cook until juice escapes sausages when pierced with a knife. Remove the sausages & place in a covered bowl in the refrigerator until you're ready to add them later to the simmering sauce.

Add 1 can of whole tomato & 1 can of tomato paste + 1 tomato past can full of water into a blender & blend on pulse for just a few seconds. Pour mixture into stock pot with the onion & garlic. Blend the 2nd can of whole tomatoes & tomato paste (don't forget the tomato paste can full of water), pour into the stock pot, & continue until all cans have been blended & added.

Add about 1/2 to 3/4 bottle of Merlot wine to the pot of sauce. Drink the rest! :)

Add a handful of each (or more or less, according to your tastes) of oregano, basil, & parsley to the pot of sauce. Then add salt, pepper, and crushed red pepper to taste.

Put the Italian sausages (or pre-cooked meatballs) back into the sauce to simmer.

Put 3 whole bay leaves on the top of the sauce & leave in for flavoring while the sauce is simmering. Be sure to remove all bay leaves before serving.

Let sauce simmer for several hours before serving! Serve over pasta of your choice! Freeze leftovers for later meals.

Note: I realize this is a lot of ingredients and it takes a bit of time to make this sauce but it is SO worth it (it's the recipe from Oronzo's Italian grandmother so you know it has to be good)! You'll get a big stock pot worth of sauce that you can freeze into individual serving sizes to use later for pasta, pizza sauce, etc. This amount of leftover usually lasts our family a good month or so!

Now I look forward to seeing your Favorite Ingredients Greatest Hits Edition recipe!

Don't forget to link your specific recipe post link on Mr. Linky so I can see what's cooking at your house!

Oh, and be sure to put the title of your recipe in parenthesis! It makes it so much quicker for me to go back and search for recipes as I build my weekly menu.

Thanks so much for your participation. I do appreciate it!

Go check out A Chelsea Morning's Little Shoppe! You'll be glad you did!
A blogger whom I admire, Barb from A Chelsea Morning,  has just opened up a new online shop and I'd like to encourage you all to go take a look!

At A Chelsea Morning's Little Shoppe you'll find all sorts of wonderful hand made items like burp clothes, sock monkeys, fleece blankets, and more!

Before her shop even opened, I ordered a set of three burp clothes from Barb, to give as a gift to Baby Bug's parents.

Paying Barb was made simple by using Paypal.  Once my payment was received, Barb shipped out my order quite promptly.

I was delighted with the quality and style of the burp clothes and I loved the adorable way Barb had packaged them.

I would highly recommend any hand made item that Barb has to offer!  She is a pleasure to do business with!

When Love Takes You In
I saw this over at A Foster Mom's Journey and I couldn't resist sharing it on my blog as well.

Apparently, Steven Curtis Chapman is a Christian musican/singer and is both a biological father and an adoptive father. He has an organization that helps people adopt children.

Beautiful, isn't it?

Favorite Ingredients Friday (Desserts Edition)

Happy Friday! It's time for my Favorite Ingredients Friday Dessert Edition!

I have a sweet tooth and I love to bake. Oh, and I'm a chocoholic too! I thought it'd be fun to have a dessert-themed recipe exchange. I hope you can share some of your favorite dessert recipes with me!

The recipe I'm about to share is something I found on FoodNetwork.com. It takes a bit of work but believe me when I tell you it's worth the effort. This cake is scrumptous and sure to please your loved ones!

A Gooey, Decadent Chocolate Cake

Ingredients:
2 1/2 cups cake flour
1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 sticks unsalted butter, at room temperature
2 cups sugar
3 1/2 ounces semisweet or bittersweet dark chocolate, melted and cooled
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 eggs
1 1/2 cups cold water
Chambourd raspberry liqueur, for drizzling
Chocolate Chip Butter Cream, recipe follows
Dark chocolate shavings, for decoration

Directions:
Position an oven rack in the center of the oven and pre-heat the oven to 350 degrees F.

In a large bowl, sift together the flour, baking soda, and salt; set aside. In the bowl of an electric mixer, cream the butter and the sugar until light and fluffy. Add the cooled chocolate and vanilla and beat for 3 minutes to incorporate. Beat in the eggs one at a time. Scrape down the sides of the bowl and beat for another 3 minutes. Gradually mix in the dry ingredients in 3 batches, alternating with the cold water. Beat for 1 minute after each addition to incorporate the ingredients. Mix until the batter is smooth.

Coat 2 (9-inch) round cake pans with non-stick cooking spray. Cut 2 circles of parchment paper to fit the pan bottoms and place them inside the pans; then spray the paper for added non-stick insurance. Pour batter into the prepared pans and smooth the surface with a spatula; the pans should be 2/3 full. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, see Cook's note*.

Leave to cool for 40 minutes. Turn the cakes out of the pans and remove the paper. Drizzle them with a few tablespoons of Chambourd. With a metal spatula, spread 1/2 cup butter cream on top 1 of the layers. Start in the center and work your way out. Carefully place the second layer on top. Smooth the sides with butter cream, then spread the rest over the top so that the cake is completely covered. Refrigerate for 5 minutes before decorating or cutting.

With a large knife scrape some shavings from a block of dark chocolate. Scatter shavings over cake.

*Cook's note: The cake is cooked when a toothpick inserted in the centre comes out clean and the cake springs back when touched.

Chocolate Chip Butter Cream: 3 cups powdered sugar 7 tablespoons hot water 4 ounces dark chocolate, melted and cooled 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1/2 stick unsalted butter, at room temperature 1/4 cup semisweet dark chocolate, finely chopped.

In the bowl of an electric mixer, dissolve the sugar and water at low speed. Beat in the dark chocolate and vanilla. Add butter gradually in small bits. Mix until everything is completely incorporated. Using a spatula, fold in the chopped chocolate and give a final quick spin.
I hope if you try this recipe you'll let me know how it turned out for you! Now I look forward to seeing your Favorite Ingredients Dessert Edition recipe!

Don't forget to link your specific recipe post link on Mr. Linky so I can see what's cooking at your house!

Oh, and be sure to put the title of your recipe in parenthesis! It makes it so much quicker for me to go back and search for recipes as I build my weekly menu.

April Pay It Forward Book Exchange- 11 books up for grabs!

It's time for another one of my free Pay It Forward book giveaways!

For those who may have missed out, please read about the guidelines right here.

So, I have one book to give away this month.

1) Creations In Death by J.D. Robb.

This book was sent to me by Anne with Authors on the Web. Thanks, Anne!

Editorial Review by Publishers Weekly:

At 27 books and counting, Nora Roberts is more prolific under her Robb pseudonym than most authors manage in a single career. Yet the latest in her not-so-near-future detective series featuring New York Police Det. Eve Dallas offers a satisfyingly novel mélange of suspense, sex, forensics and heroics. It's 2060, and the serial killer nicknamed The Groom is back in town after an absence of nine years, resuming his horrific run of kidnapping, torturing and killing young women. Dallas, who served as a detective in the frustrating first investigation, assumes lead role in this one. This time, not only do the killer's chosen victims have ties to Dallas's husband, Roarke, but Dallas herself may be the killer's ultimate target. Swiftly paced, the story cuts frequently from the investigation to the killer's progress with his victims. Dallas works to outplan, outfight and outsmart the killer; to keep her handsome, rich husband happy; and to be ready for the next round after a good night's sleep. Robb's latest is bound to please Dallas fans.

I love Nora Roberts and this book was an excellent read. It kept me in suspense the entire time I was reading it. I think you'll enjoy it!

If you'd like to this book, here is what you must do:

1. On your blog, write a post about this giveaway, using my "Pay It Forward" button, and then link back to my post. I am sure your readers would appreciate learning about the chance to win a book. You must complete this step to be put in the drawing, unless of course you don't have a blog!

2. Sign the Mr. Linky (the Mr. Linky is that list of names at the end of this post - just type your name in the box) with your name and the specific URL of your PIF post. Note: If you are not a blogger, you may still enter to win. Just sign your name on the Mr. Linky without a URL and then email me your contact information. Please note on your email that it is for the PIF book giveaway.

I'll announce the winner on Saturday morning, 19 April, so be sure to check back.

Best of luck!

If you have any books you'd like to Pay It Forward yourself this month, please leave me a comment and I'll link you in this post!
