Five Ingredients Friday (Caramel Brownies)
It's Friday again and time for another recipe Five Ingredients Friday exchange! Before I post my recipe, I'd like to ask a few question.
Are you running out of recipes that have only 5 or fewer ingredients? Do you think I should expand this to, say, a 14 ingredient recipe exchange? I, personally, like the simplicity of the fewer ingredient recipes, but I'm open to considering more if enough of you tell me that's what you want. Your feedback would be appreciated.
The recipe I'm about to share is from a cookbook that my mom gave me back in 1994. It's called, Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxiliary. It's stock full of delicious recipes submitted by ladies from all over the mid-Western community I was raised in. I hope you enjoy this one. It's one of my favorites!
Caramel Brownies
Ingredients
- 1 can evaporated milk
- 3/4 cup butter
- 1 box German chocolate cake
- 14 ounces caramels
- 12 oz. chocolate chips
Preparation
- With a mixer combine 1/3 cup evaporated milk, 3/4 cup butter, and cake mix. The batter should be crumbly.
- Put half of cake mixture into 9 x 13 inch greased and floured cake pan.
- Bake at 350 degrees for 6 minutes.
- While baking, melt caramels and 1/3 cup evaporated milk in microwave until caramels are liquid.
- Remove cake from the oven and pour the caramel mixture over top.
- Sprinkle with chocolate chips and the second half of the cake mixture.
- Bake for another 15 minutes at 350 degrees.
- Cool 30 minutes.
I look forward to seeing your Five Ingredients Friday recipe! Don't forget to link your blog on this post so I can see what's cooking at your house!
Oh, and be sure to put the title of your recipe in parenthesis! It makes it so much quicker for me to go back and search for recipes as I build my weekly menu.
Thanks so much for your participation! I do appreciate it!

To answer your question, first let me state that I like the simplicity (and the sound) of Five Ingredients Friday but it is sometimes challanging to come up with one. How about Simple Recipe Friday or..... I am gonna have to think on it for a while. I will get back to you.
I've been reading for a while (sent by my friend momteacherfriend) and thought I'd delurk for this post. Although I haven't been able to cook for months (I've been in Africa serving in the US military for the past six months), I've made these brownies before and they are amazingly decadent for how simple they are to make - they always get rave reviews.
As for your question, I, too, like the simplicity and sound of Five Ingredient Friday (I'm taking notes for when I get home soon!) but more flexibility in the number of ingredients might be nice... What about Fun Food Friday? End-of-the-Week Easy Recipes?
Hi Overwhelmed...
Yes I am interested in having more ingredients. I posted the last on my list of five ingredient recipes today.
Friday Fourteen sounds good it's like the meme Thursday Thirteen, but having the flexibility of up to 14 ingredients would be nice.
Some of the recipes I have are mostly spices that take it over the 5 ingredient limit set.
Thanks for considering a new idea!
Blessings
I agree that seasonings are what take most over the 5 ingredient limit, but I don't want to lose the quick & easy factor. I'm definitely open to more ingredients.
This is my first time playing... I've seen this meme and had wanted to play along, but I have very few recipes that are 5 ingredients or less. I look forward to checking out everyone else's submissions today... those Brownies look absolutely delicious!
:)
Mmmmmmm, are you sharing?? ;)
The Caramel Brownie recipe looks delicious! I would love it if you would up it to like 7-10 ingredients, as I love the simplicity of the recipes but am hard pressed to find recipes that haven't already been used by other bloggers. I can find a lot of 7 ingredients!
Okay, sorry, I left two links because I forgot to put my recipe name in the 1st one! Ooops.
Wow, your recipe sounds DELICIOUS!!!
I am printing it off to try this weekend!
Oh, and thanks for all your faithful comments - they are much appreciated!
Oh, and while I am open to up to 14 ingredients, that does lessen the likelihood that I will have those things around the kitchen.
I have TONNES of 5 ingredient recipes left. I also think that it is a good challenge for us to come up with simple recipes that are delicious. There are hundreds of recipe websites that are interactive as well as searchable. You can also google search 5 ingredient recipes.
Anyways, those are just my two cents for keeping it simple!
These brownies sound sinful!!
I really like the 5 Ingredients because of it being simple, and the fewer ingredients the more possibility I'll have everything in my house and not have to run to the Commissary :)
I do agree with some of the comments about the spices taking up the ingredients - so maybe still make it 5, or even 7 (but then it would have the same sound as 5 Ingredient Friday) but not counting the spices (does that makes sense)?
14 ingredients sounds like a lot to me, although I know when you start adding up spices a lot of recipes quickly reach that #!
GAH! These brownies are not part of "Jenna Lose Weight Before the End of the Year" plan. You know. GAH! ;)
This sounds yummy... perfect for the fall:) I think 14 ingrediants would be a great idea:)
Got your comment and love the idea of Favorite Friday Ingredients! woohoo!
I'm ready to go. Thanks so much for this.
I love this whole concept. Just purchased the ingredients for these brownies. Cost $10 and that's not counting the CALORIES! A treat it will be but definitely not things you have on hand in the pantry! I love the idea of simply Friday. I want to contribute but don't have 5 ingredient dishes to add.... still reading. Thanks!
I think it would be better if it wasnt just 5 ingredients....its kinda hard to find just 5. But before you post a recipe it should be something you have tried ...not you, but the person who posted the recipe....lol
mmmmmmmmmmmmmm that sounds yummy!
That sounds just DELICIOUS. I have a weakness for brownies.
These brownies sound absolutely delicious! And they have such a short baking time too, unbelievable. I'm definitely giving these a try this weekend.
I love the 5 ingredients, I think there are millions of recipes out there with 5 ingredients, but they're just hard to come by. Maybe open the window for 5-10 ingredients. 14 would be a little overwhelming to choose from, and reading the recipes might get kind of boring. I like the idea of having just 5 ingredients, that way, most people have all of those ingredients or don't need to go out and buy very much (for those watching their budgets) and it just FEELS less time-consuming. But by having a window for up to 10 ingredients, that allows many more recipes to be shared.
Thanks for hosting! =)
I'm laughing out loud at Jenna's comment. These wonderfully delicious recipes are definitely not on our diet lists! You know you're in trouble when one of the ingredients is sweetened condensed milk! But what the heck, who cares?
OK, no recipe from me today. Or last week. Which made me sad. But I simply ran out of recipes that only have 5 ingredients.
I love, love the idea of keeping this going by changing the number.
"Fourteen or Fewer Ingredients Friday" sounds like the perfect title to me. Since a lot of the ingredients in most recipes are the seasonings, I think it would still draw fairly simple recipes.
I so want to participate in this but not if I have to buy cooking magazines to search for recipes with only five ingredients, which I did last month. I'd rather post recipes that are tried and true.
Just my humble opinion. Well, I MEANT it to sound humble. Sigh...
Oooh! I just thought of another one. "Fourteen or Fewer Friday." That kind of flows.
I like this idea of yours: "Favorite Ingredients Friday" - we can make is as simple or not so simple as we would like! Excellent idea!
I forgot. The Brownies look fabulous! I love caramel! Thanks bunches!
I should have the "rules" for the Christmas Ornament Exchange up tomorrow sometime!
I often "lurk" on your five ingredient fridays...I have never posted one of my own. I really enjoy the simplicity of the five ingredient recipes but I don't have that many of my own to contribute I guess. Silly idea but maybe something like five plus five ingredient friday every once in awhile to change it up?
I like cooking so I enjoy the recipes regardless.
Sounds great......I will have to try this one.
What about alternating between the two? One week do 5 ingredient Friday and the next one do 14 - that way we can still post our really simple recipes and the more complex ones.
The brownies sound delicious!! Have a great Monday :)
