Query Response from Adoptive Families!

Look at this email I just got!

Hi OW,

We're finally getting back to you about the query you sent us in June asking if we'd like you to send your essay about adopting without using an agency. The answer is yes.

Apologies for keeping you waiting. We look forward to seeing your essay.

Thanks much,

Adoptive Families

Yikes! I can't believe it, they want me to submit a personal essay for review! My query got a response! Now, I have to sit down and consolidate my story of Snuggle Bug's adoption. I've been advised to shoot for one essay that's 600-800 words long.

Their Writer's Guidelines specify that if my personal essay is chosen and published, I will receive a one-year subscription to the magazine. Not bad. My subscription is due to expire in March 07 and I had intended to renew. More importantly, I'd have an article published in one of my favorite magazines!

I guess I'll be doing some writing and editing while on our family vacation. Isn't it ironic that Adoptive Families wants to hear more about our experience adopting without an agency and yet we're not forced to consider using an agency for our second adoption. Oh well, what can you do?

I'm curious, have any of you been published in Adoptive Families or any other magazine?

congratulations! That's very exciting news! How could they not chose to publish your story - you tell it so well! Good luck with editing down to 800 words!

Congrats! That's an awesome project! I feel like I need to rely on an agency since this is my first. I've heard more horror stories when people go without a private agency. Can't wait to hear more about your article!

I had a great experience working with them and they are very very nice. They will be lucky to have something you've written! :)

As they're not geared, at all, towards firstparents, no, I haven't been published there. I was published in a local magazine (back in PA) talking about how to choose a college. But that was forever ago!

That is so exciting! I am happy for you and I know that the article will be great, but like you said the problem will be meeting the length requirement. You have a great story.

And yes, I've been published in various magazines, but not in those pertaining to adoption.

I am so happy for you. What an honor and I know you will do an excellent job but I must agree with other's that limiting it to 800 words would be hard. Maybe they would agree to a Part 1 at 800 words followed by a Part 2 at 800 words?

I will be praying for you as you work on this awesome project!

I have only had poetry published before in various magazines. They either except it or reject it. Pretty simple there.

How nice! Maybe we can get a sneak peak at your essay? :-)

I've been published one time and it wasn't even anything I wrote. It was a photo of a dollhouse I built, published in a miniatures magazine. Very exciting although the only thing I got from it was a lot of satisfaction. :-)

Hooray for you! Two of my essays have been published in magazines, and one, in part, in a book. That was so exciting. There is a link to my essays on my blog.

I am so happy for you!

Congratulations! That is wonderful and I look forward to hearing more about it! I have been published but mostly poetry and a few small articles not about adoption. Good for you taking initiative!

That is so amazing. I look forward to reading it!!

I've been published for sports articles in newspapers and online, plus photography but nothing like this. Of course since I just arrived here, you are probably thinking hmmm, so what?

So hello! I wandered here from Jenna's blog. I adore her; she and I have been chatting on the interwebs for awhile. She's been a huge support for us. After years of IF, we adopted from foster care here in North Carolina several years ago and our amazing daughter is now eight. Our adoption was supposed to be mostly closed since it was through the state but we've pried open the door and have no intention of shutting it. So I loved your listing of who everyone was - I think I need that too!

I love the recipes as well as the writing, so I'm going to link to you and visit again!
