Works-for -Me Wednesday (list of age appropriate children's chores)

Edited on 9/27/06 to add:

This week Shannon has asked that, instead of publishing a new idea, we go back into our archives and re-print the best WFMW tip we've ever run. I'd have to say my Children's Chore List was by far the most well received. So, per Shannon's instructions, I'm linking it again this week. For those of you who missed it last week and would like me to email you the list, now is your chance. Just leave me your email in the comments section and I'll send it!
_________________________________________________________________

It's time to post another WFMW tip.

I'm not sure where I stumbled across this list, and I'm sure there are others out there, but I have this one taped up on our refrigerator. It helps to give me ideas on what tasks to encourage Snuggle Bug to learn. Granted, he's not quite 2 years old (not until December) but he's a smart little guy and he already does #1, 2, 3, 8, 10, & 13 (of the 2 & 3 Year Olds list) to the best of his ability.

I'm sorry this list is nearly impossible to read. If Blogger would let me upload my digital file (I had to use Photobucket instead) it'd actually be an enlarged clearer view when you clicked on it, but that's not happening at the moment. So if you'd like me to email this list to you in a Word document so that you can read it and print off a nice copy, just leave me a comment with your email address and I'd be happy to do so!

This works for me. Maybe it'll work for you too! I'd love to hear about some of the age appropriate chores that your children are doing!

If you'd like to share something that works for you, please leave me a comment. And be sure to link yourself over at Shannon's, the host of Works-For-Me Wednesday.

**Edited to Add**

Looks like it's going to be one long email list, but I don't mind! I'll get this sent out later this afternoon, okay?

Oh, and for those of you who somehow managed to read the list as it is now, I'm very impressed. Maybe I need to get my eyes checked because, for the life of me, if I didn't already know what was on the list, I would have no idea what any of it says! :)

One last thing, those of you leaving me your email addresses, I promise I will not try to get rich quick by selling them to a mass marketing firm. :) I'll use them just to send out this list, well unless I already know you and email you in response to the comments you leave, then you'll probably hear from me again anyway.

**Edited again to add**

Wow! I had no idea this list would be so requested. That's great! I think I've gotten it emailed out to everyone that's requested it thus far. If I've missed anyone or if anyone else still wants the list, just let me know!

Hi There! Would really like to have a good look at this list too please. :) You have my e-mail! ;)

Munchkin, three in December,
* Cleans up her toys before she gets to watch her programme.
* Puts her clothes in her laundry basket at the end of the day.
* Puts clothes in the dryer/washing machine for me. (I hand them to her)
* Brings her plate and cup back to the kitchen after eating.
* And she loves following me around when I am cleaning upstairs. With her little J-cloth in her hands. But I don't think that really counts as a chore! :)

All the best!

My 1-year old picks up crumbs he sees in the carpet and hands them to me. My 3-year old does all of the chores listed in the first two columns and some of those listed in the third column. My favorite so far is how he helps me plan meals.

“What should we eat today?” I ask.

“How about rice and eggs and bacon?” he says.

“Sounds good.”

“How about arroz caldo?”

“Hmm,” I hesitate.

My 3-year old then gives me his thinking look.

“Or,” he adds, “if you’re … what do you call that again? … lazy? Just order pizza, OK?”

I have a three year old. Her chores so far are:

getting dressed herself
unloading the silverware from the dishwasher
helping "fold" the kitchen towels and put them away
set the table

She LOVES chores!! I hope that lasts for awhile. :-)

Me too! Me too! (Do you promise to not sell my addy to some mass market company?... okay.)

sshields@firstam.com

My daughter (10) and son (6) do a multiple activities around the house. They both do these things:

Clean own room (pick up and make beds)
Clean bathroom
Sweep
Empty dishwasher
Put clean clothes away
Sweep back deck
Brush cat
Trash collecting and rolling to curb
Yardwork (collecting twigs/raking)
Setting table
Turning out lights
Feed the cat

Boy you would think that I was a slave master! These are relatively easy tasks and our main focus is to teach them responsibility, time management and the fundamentals of finances combined with house keeping.

I have bad eyesight and need glasses (mostly for driving) but surprisingly I could make out some of these - not claiming I could read all of them, but some yes!

1. Put away toys.
2. Put books, magazines in a rack.
4. Help set table.
5. Clean up food dropped during a meal.

Am I doing ok so far? :)

At 8:35 AM, Blogger Overwhelmed! said...

Wow, Michelle, I'm impressed! :) You have all of those correct. And #3 is "sweep floor".

I must just need new contacts because you're not the only one who has managed to make some of these out. :)

Darn Blogger, I've been trying repeatedly to attach the list again, for better viewing, but it's still not being accepted.

Oh well, I don't mind emailing it out. I may even add some of these great examples I'm getting in my comments section before emailing it out, so keep those coming!

At 8:51 AM, Blogger DeAnna said...

Great list and idea. Isabella does 1-12 in the first list (#13 the dirty clothes in hamper is my fault because I need a new hamper for her) BUT, I have to say that I have not been having her do them as "chores" - on a regular basis, just letting her help out with things. She loves to help me clean, do the laundry, and cook (which normally consists of her either making toast, mixing something or standing away from the stove holding a spoon for mommy) Well, the potty training, washing hands and face, and cleaning up her toys and books - those are on a daily basis. :) She became potty trained by doing a sticker chart for her, so I think we should do the same thing for her with doing chores. I would like a copy of the list sent to me so I can read it better. (I've been having problems with blogger for the last 2 days, I can't seem to get anything to work right!)

what a great list for the lil' ones...i know i'm a bit late but would it be possible to send it to me as well?

4.5 years ago, God had blessed us with triplets (one special sweet angel went back to heaven) and the two surviving triplets are now preschoolers. they have simple chores like pick up/clean up after themselves, pick their clothing and dress themselves, go potty, brush teeth etc., clean up toys, pick up any garbage, put dirty clothes in laundry hamper, sweep up the crumbs after meals, practice abc's and other schoolwork, recite the rules...but it would be nice to find out what other things i could teach them about responsibilities. PS found you through my sis, Mary Ann @ follow your bliss...love five ingredient fridays and your sweet blog!!! ;)looney (my e-mail address is irishfliptrips@hotmail.com) thanks so much!!!
